Finding the right treatment for RA

When it comes to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), finding the right treatment can make all the difference.

Danny and his rheumatologist tried a number of different treatments. Steroids were among the first treatments he used. They worked wonderfully for Danny at first, but the benefits were only short-term. The effects wore off as Danny's rheumatologist gradually decreased the dose.

The rheumatologist moved Danny on to other medications, such as methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil®), which are disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS). Danny also tried slow- and fast-acting morphine and other medications, but none of these alternatives helped Danny with his arthritis. He continued to have severe symptoms and was still unable to work.

Then, Danny's rheumatologist recommended another type of medication, a biologic called Remicade®, for Danny and his family doctor to consider. Based on his rheumatologist's suggestion and the fact that other treatments just weren't working for him, Danny agreed to try it.

Danny started this treatment in April 2005. After the first dose, he was amazed at how quickly he saw improvements in his RA symptoms. He currently does not feel any aches or pain from his RA.

Finding the right treatment has helped Danny by not only freeing him of his RA symptoms, but also controlling the disease itself. The right treatment has helped him take control of the disease and helped prevent further joint damage.

Talk with your doctor or rheumatologist and be proactive about finding the right treatment for you.

Danny believes that it's important to "keep a positive attitude," and that there are medications available that can help with your RA - "you just need to trust your doctor."

*Although Danny received dramatic results from the treatments he and his doctors decided upon, everyone is different. Not everyone achieves these results and these medications may not be appropriate for every person with RA. Tell your doctor about how you are feeling and ask about all your treatment options. Danny's story shows that it's important to take action and get information on your condition, while keeping in mind the risks and benefits when you're deciding on a treatment.
