Sleep on this:
Here’s what poor sleep has to offer your health:
- Poor cognitive function
- Poor heart health
- Reduced libido
- Depression
- Premature aging
- Weight gain
- Impaired judgment
These are all health effects you want to avoid, and CAN avoid, with consistent restful sleep. You need at least seven hours of quality sleep per night in order to benefit the most from sleep.
Human beings repair and recharge with nutrition and rest. Last month I talked about how digestive enzymes and stomach bitters, along with probiotics, help you get the most from your digestion. That’s only half of what you need for optimal health when it comes to regenerating and repairing tissues, detoxifying, and charging your batteries for a new day.
Sleep is something you need as much as food and, like food, sleep must be high quality in order for us to get the most benefit.
A number of things affect our sleep patterns:
- Computers, TVs, Tablets, Phones and any other digital display. The light emitted changes our production of melatonin.
- Stress. Either physical or emotional can have a negative impact on sleep.
- Medications. Some meds, both prescription or over-the-counter, can prevent you from falling asleep. Speak to your Live Well pharmacist about whether medications you take affect sleep.
- Caffeine. This one’s not news but the more you have to stay awake during the day, the harder it will be to fall asleep at night.
- Alcohol. The drowsiness which may occur after consuming alcohol is not conducive to healthy restful sleep. Kind of like a boxer’s right cross punch. It may put you out, but you don’t wake up rested and healthy.
Melatonin, a hormone you produce naturally, is one option to help you get to sleep. It’s popular among shift workers and travelers as it helps reset their “sleep clock” and adjust to sleep in a different time zone. For some taking melatonin results in vivid dreaming.
Another sleep supplement I suggest to customers is Relax+ by Vitality. Relax+ contains Valerian, which is a sedative, Passionflower, which helps to calm running thoughts, and Cramp Bark which relaxes muscles.
The result is a restful, natural sleep and no leftover drowsiness the next morning.
