Proper Gut Health=Better Sleep
Your gut produces around 400 times more melatonin, often referred to as the “sleep hormone”, than the pineal gland in your brain.
By maintaining optimal gut health (healthy diet, low stress, healthy gut flora) you also benefit from optimal production of melatonin which has the following benefits:
- Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant. Studies have shown that women who develop breast cancer and men who develop prostate cancer tend to have lower levels of melatonin.
- Melatonin improves insulin sensitivity. This can help reduce body fat storage and prevent type 2 diabetes.
- Melatonin has anti-inflammatory properties. This helps regulate inflammation in the gut as well as slows the aging process.
- Melatonin helps regulate your immune system and makes you less likely to get sick.
- Melatonin regulates your circadian rhythm and helps you get restful sleep.
While these points might make it seem like the best way to achieve optimal melatonin levels in your body is to take a melatonin supplement, and sometimes that is the route one must take, it is equally important to make sure your gut health is the best it can be.
Along with a clean diet, supplementing with probiotics can help you improve your gut health and, in addition to the myriad other bodily functions your gut affects, improve your quality of sleep.
