Optimal hydration means more than just drinking water…

When your body temperature rises, due to heat, exercise, stress, or hormone shifts, you perspire in order to keep your internal temperature at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Sweating helps release heat and cool you down to help maintain optimal body temperature.

When you sweat you primarily lose water, but you also lose electrolytes which perform a number of essential functions in your body.

Electrolytes are chemicals, sometimes referred to as “salts,” that carry electric charges in your nerves and muscles. For example, electrolytes are used by your heart to help it keep beating. Electrolytes are important for functions like hydration, blood pressure, and tissue repair. Magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium are all electrolytes that should be present in your diet.

During the hottest summer days, it is important to get enough water, especially if you are active in the heat, but it is essential that your electrolytes are replenished as well.

Pharmasave Summerland has electrolytes available in effervescent tablets, drinkable powders, ready-made beverages, and even gummies for when you need to replace those salts lost through excessive sweating.

Additionally, electrolyte deficiency can be a result of vomiting and/or diarrhea and should be replenished in those situations as well.

Speak to the Live Well team at Pharmasave Summerland for more information about how you can maintain optimal hydration and electrolyte balance.
