Meet Dr. Deirdre O’neill

In our ongoing efforts to highlight some of the great health care professionals in Summerland, BC and surrounding areas we are pleased to introduce one of the newest practitioners to the area.

We have some informative answers from Naturopathic doctor, Dr. Deirdre O’Neill.

Just by reading her answers you can get a sense of her warmth and desire to help her patients. I think if you suffer from pain you owe it to yourself to learn more about Dr. O’Neill.

(And check out her answer to question 5…that one took me by surprise! So insightful.)

1) Can you please tell the readers a little about yourself and your background, and where they can find you?

I am a Naturopathic Physician, newly transplanted to the Okanagan. I have been practicing up until now for 13 years on Vancouver Island. I have joined Spokes Clinic, here in Summerland.

2) How do you best describe the type of medicine you now practice? And what inspired your career path?

I like to help patients get back to doing what they love to do. I have a special interest in treating pain, arthritis and treating neurological disorders including mental health and chronic complex disease like Lyme disease.

My father, a family GP, has inspired me all the way along to strive to find solutions for patients. To go the distance.

3) Do you have any particular interests or specialties that you bring to your Naturopathic practice?

I use prolotherapy – a nonsurgical approach to treat pain from arthritis & sports injuries. You can learn more about this procedure on my website: www.drdeirdreoneill.com

I work with patients with complex chronic disease – helping them to get well again. For these patients, my treatments vary from IV therapy, chelation, mitochondrial support, immune support, antibiotics.

4) I’m sure everyone could benefit from elements of your practice, but is there a specific type of patient that would receive the most benefit from your care?

Patients who like to ask questions to better understand their health and their path to wellness.

Also, patients who like their treatment to be with natural medicine yet are seeking a doctor who will use prescription medication when necessary.

Lastly, patients who are wiling to play an active role in their healthcare.

5) What is the one thing you would encourage your patients to do to get into, or maintain, good health?

Get involved in your community.

Active people are often happier people. Volunteering in your community can help your social, physical and mental well-being. This well-being can trickle down into reducing stress induced illness.

I have saved the hardest question for the end…what is your favourite walk or outdoor activity in the Okanagan Valley? (What do you enjoy doing for fun?)

My family moved here to ski the champagne powder we have heard so much about.

Any parting words of wisdom or advice?

Surround yourself with a health care team that will strive to find answers to your problems. We all can expect to achieve optimal health.
