Good Bugs and Big Muscles

Good Bugs and Big Muscles

What is the relationship between probiotics and muscle growth?

The gut biome refers to the collection of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. These microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining overall health by helping to digest food, absorbing nutrients, and regulating the immune system. Recent research has also suggested that a healthy gut biome may play a role in maintaining muscle mass. This is because the gut biome helps to break down proteins in the diet, which are the building blocks of muscle tissue.

In addition, the gut biome produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the body. Inflammation can interfere with muscle growth and repair, so reducing inflammation through a healthy gut biome may be beneficial for maintaining muscle mass. Furthermore, some studies have shown that the gut biome may also influence the production of hormones that are important for muscle growth, such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Overall, maintaining a healthy gut biome through a balanced diet and probiotic supplementation may be a valuable strategy for preserving muscle mass and promoting overall health.
