A Call for Collagen

There are a number of products on the shelf containing collagen of different types and delivery methods. Some are marine source, some are sourced from chickens or cattle, and some products are a combination of all three. They may be capsules or drinkable powders.

Here are the benefits of each:

Marine Collagen– Also known as collagen peptides, marine collagen has been shown to improve skin hydration and elasticity when taken orally by older patients. There is also some evidence of modest reduction in skin wrinkles.

Collagen Type I– This collagen is the main type found in skin, ligaments, tendons, and bone. It plays a major role as a scaffold in normal wound healing. Collagen Type I supplements are generally bovine (cattle) sourced.

Collagen Type II– This collagen is the main structural protein in cartilage. It is also found in other types of connective tissue. Most supplemental Collagen Type II comes from chicken sources. Collagen Type II has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis such as stiffness, pain, and physical functioning.

Which collagen you choose will be based on your needs. A combination product might be the best option to optimize nutritional support for your skin, joints, and connective tissue.
