Travel Health Tips: Insect Bites

Travel Health Tips: Insect Bites

If you are heading toward an exotic destination you may encounter some of the smallest residents of that location. Specifically: insects.

Unfortunately for come travelers, exotic bug bites can transmit exotic illnesses, like malaria, dengue fever, or zika virus, or at least cause an unpleasant allergic reaction.

Here are some measures the Live Well team at Pharmasave Summerland suggests to reduce your chances of being bugged by bugs while you travel:

Icaridin Repellent (available in sprays or wipes) – odourless and non-sticky repellent. Icaridin is less likely to cause irritation to your skin than Deet repellents.

After-Bite (topical treatment) – topical treatment which relieves the itching and pain of insect bites.

Diphenhydramine HCl (Benadryl) – an antihistamine used to relieve itching and swelling caused by bug bites. May cause drowsiness.

Ledum Palustre (homeopathic preparation) – used for wounds caused by pointed objects and for all insect bites.

Apis Mellifica (homeopathic preparation) – to be used for irritated skin which is bright pink, burning, and itching; irritation is improved by cold applications.

Along with the products mentioned above, you can also avoid insect bites by wearing long sleeves and pants and staying indoors during peak hours of insect activity (mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk hours).
