Pets and Medication

Customized Veterinary Compounding Needs

We are Pharmacists working with Veterinarians to improve and maximize the therapeutic success and compliance of pets, exotics, wildlife, zoo animals, large and small animals.

Located in Carstairs Family Pharmasave, our Compounding Team consists of only PCCA Certified Technicians practicing under the supervision of Pharmacists.

How does Compounding benefit my animal?

There are many reasons why Pharmacists compound prescription medications. The most important one is “patient non-compliance”. Many medications only come in two or three strengths and are often bad tasting. A Compounding Technician can change the strength of a medication, altering its form to make it easier to ingest and add a flavor to make it more palatable. We are also able to change the form of a medication from a tablet to suspension, cream or treat.

A small sample of veterinary compounds we can prepare:

Alternate dosage forms

Creams, ointments and lotions

Commercially unavailable medications

Flavour specialization

Transdermal

Chewable flavoured troches

Oral suspensions and paste

Rectal enemas

Individualized concentrated doses

Combined medications

Medicated biscuits / treats

Flavoured dosage forms that make it easy, even fun, to dose an animal.

  • Custom strength medications for seizures, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, parasitic infections, appetite stimulation, etc.
  • Antidotes / treatments for accidental animal poisoning.
  • Vitamins and tonics.
  • NSAIDS transdermally to avoid GI tract infections.
  • Commercially unavailable, combination, custom-formulated products.
  • Protective medicated coatings for wounds or stitches (coatings which are difficult to lick off).
  • Transdermal, anti-inflammation gel for torn ligaments.
  • Hard to find medication for urinary tract incontinence.
  • Transdermal anti-motion sickness medicine which can be applied to outer ear surface.
  • Concentrated solutions for birds & reptiles, matching the dose according to the animal’s size.
  • Medicated treats and much more!

At Carstairs and Didsbury Pharmasave, we understand that having to give an animal medication is not fun. With the art of compounding we can help make the whole experience that much easier!
