Managing your Child’s Fever
Managing your Child’s Fever
Fever is a natural response to fighting an infection and it is beneficial to the healing process. The biggest myth we believe about fevers is that we have to get all fevers down and return the temperature to normal. This tends to make caregivers over treat fevers.
When your child is experiencing a fever, it is important to keep the child comfortable and offer plenty of fluids. Comfort measures may include removing blankets or clothing to let the heat escape and giving medication. Treating with acetaminophen (Tylenol) should be, in most cases, the first choice for treating a fever. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) should be used with caution in children who are dehydrated, as this may worsen potential side effects. Unfortunately, dehydration is always a concern with fevers.
The common practice of alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen every 4-5 hours is not endorsed by the Canadian Pediatric Society. Choose one drug, dose it properly and give it regularly.
Speaking to a Pharmacist about your child’s specific needs will allow us to suggest the best temperature measuring device, medication, dose and dosing schedule for your child. The best dose may not be the one suggested on the product itself.
Remember to see a doctor if your child has a fever and is less than 6 months old, has had a fever for longer than 72 hours or you notice any significant changes in behaviour or sleeping patterns.
