How Strong Are Your Bones?
How strong and beautiful are your bones?
Are you getting adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D? Are you at risk of developing osteoporosis or brittle bones?
The guidelines for the dietary reference intakes (DRI) of calcium and Vitamin D to maintain bone health have changed. Many foods contain calcium so you may only need minimal calcium supplements to reach your requirement. There are many different types of calcium supplements available. There are also some medications that change the absorption of some calcium supplements.
Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) is usually taken as a supplement as it is manufactured in our skin after exposure to sun and we don’t get enough strong sunshine rays, especially in the winter.
Medications used to treat osteopenia/osteoporosis such as alendronate, risedronate, didrocal still need you to take extra calcium and Vitamin D – they don’t replace these supplements but utilize them.
Make sure you consult with your health care professional to discuss your particular needs and guidelines in the supplementation of calcium and Vitamin D.
