Butterbur. What is it for?

 

Butterbur is a perennial shrub found throughout Europe, parts of Asia, and even in North America. The leaves of this plant are large and were used at one time to wrap butter, that’s the origin of its name.

But when you see a bottle of butterbur extract on the shelf, it may casue you to wonder “what is butterbur extract used for?”.

Butterbur extract has been used for a number of ailments including sleep disorders, anxiety, digestion, asthma, and migraines.

 

Clinical testing has shown specific forms of butterbur extract o be beneficial for:

  • Reducing frequency, intensity and duration of migraine headaches
  • Reducing symptoms of hayfever
  • Improving symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients experiencing Somatoform disorder

 

There is also some preliminary evidence that butterbur can improve symptoms of bronchitis.
