- Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health recommends aiming to drink less. If you do choose to drink, they recommend setting a weekly drinking target and to limit yourself to no more than 2 drinks on any day. A standard drink counts as any of the following:
- a bottle of beer (12 oz., 341 ml, 5% alcohol)
- a bottle of cider (12 oz., 341 ml, 5% alcohol)
- a glass of wine (5 oz., 142 ml, 12% alcohol)
- a shot glass of spirits (1.5 oz., 43 ml, 40% alcohol)
- Health Canada recommends using sunscreen labeled "broad spectrum" and "water resistant" with an SPF of at least 30.
- Stay hydrated! Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to maintain hydration and reduce headache and dizziness. Aim for one glass of water for every standard size drink you consume.
- Avoid high-risk activities if you know you are going to be having a drink. Refrain from swimming, boating or operating vehicles after consuming alcohol, even if you feel sober.
- Use other techniques to reduce anxiety instead of having a drink. Things such as walking, yoga, meditation, reading, or cooking are great alternatives to relax.
- Have access to non-alcoholic beverages for yourself and guests so everyone can enjoy a refreshing beverage without the awkward feeling of turning down a drink.
By incorporating these tips into your summer plans, you can enjoy what summer has to offer while prioritizing your body and mind!
