Tips on Building Gift Baskets

Gift baskets are fun to give and easy to build if you plan ahead and have the right tools and items on hand before you start. Find out how you can make your gift basket in 6 easy steps below!

  1. Plan ahead & set a budget – shop early and watch out for sales. End of season is a great time to buy seasonal items on sale or clearout. If you have a budget in mind keep track of the items you have bought for the basket so you don’t go over your budget.
  2. Be creative on what you will use as the ‘basket’ – Baskets are great and come in many different shapes and sizes but there are also lots of other container ideas that work with your theme better like a laundry basket for a housewarming theme, or large mixing bowl for a kitchen or baking theme or maybe a sand pail for a beach theme.
  3. Build up your base – Items look best when they sit high in the basket rather than lower down inside the basket. To build your base try stuffing bubble wrap, crumpled newspaper, or tissue and then topping with basket filler to hide the base. For deeper containers, empty boxes and Styrofoam blocks provide a solid base to start from.
  4. Select a variety of gift items – Different shapes, sizes, textures and colours all add visual interest to your basket. Small items are great for filling space.
  5. Place & Secure – Test place your items in the basket to determine optimal balance and visual layout. Tall items work best in the back and smaller items in the front. Once you are happy with the item placement, use glue dots, tape or string to keep everything in place.
  6. Outside wrap – cellophane or tulle are great for wrapping baskets, just remember to pull the material taut before tying off a the top. Fold in and tape down shorter edges that don’t quite make it to the top. Use a bow to dress up the basket. There are lots of step-by-step videos that show you how to make your own bow. Our favourite video on how to make a bow is from Carlton Cards.
